Virginia Beach itinerary scene

4-day / 3-night itinerary

Three nights in Virginia Beach: boardwalk, maritime forest, and wild coast

Arrive for an Oceanfront evening, give the boardwalk and Rudee Inlet a full day, spend the next day between First Landing and Chesapeake Bay, then choose Sandbridge, Back Bay, or the aquarium before leaving.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A longer Virginia Beach itinerary gives each area or principal outing room to breathe while keeping arrival, weather, and departure realistic.

Best length

4 days / 3 nights

Three nights provide an arrival evening, two complete coastal days, and a useful departure morning. Add a night for False Cape, a long wildlife outing, or a weather buffer.

Stay

Embassy Suites by Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Resort

An Oceanfront resort with suite-style rooms, beach access, pools, dining, and a spa near the north end of the…

Main activity

the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife

Use the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife as the first full-day anchor, then give each added day a distinct area or purpose.

Daily geography

One coast district at a time

Walk or bike within the Oceanfront, then drive deliberately to First Landing, Shore Drive, or Sandbridge rather than shuttling between them all day.

Virginia Beach boardwalk and Atlantic surf in morning light
Let the arrival evening and first morning stay on the Oceanfront, when the boardwalk is easiest to understand on foot.
Live oaks and cypress along a First Landing State Park trail
The second day changes from resort shore to maritime forest and the calmer Chesapeake Bay edge.
Sandbridge dunes and broad beach south of the resort district
Give Sandbridge and Back Bay their own southbound day rather than a hurried detour after the boardwalk.
Kayakers and dolphin-watching boats off Virginia Beach
Departure morning can hold the aquarium, Rudee Inlet, or a final beach walk without crossing the city again.

Arrival

Dinner and a short walk after arrival.

Use arrival day for check-in, one nearby meal, and a short orientation rather than spending the trip's energy immediately.

4:00 PM

Check in

Stay at Embassy Suites by Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Resort.

An Oceanfront resort with suite-style rooms, beach access, pools, dining, and a spa near the north end of the boardwalk.

6:30 PM

First dinner

Start with The Hampton Social - Virginia Beach.

A polished Atlantic Park dining room for seafood, cocktails, and a lively first-night meal near the Oceanfront entertainment district.

Day 2

Save the best part of the day for the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife.

Give the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife the strongest daylight window, then keep the remaining stops in the same area or along the natural return route.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Start with Arbuckle’s Bar & Grill.

A Cavalier Resort dining option for breakfast or a convenient meal near the north Oceanfront hotels and Neptune Park.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Save the best part of the day for the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife.

Give the Oceanfront boardwalk, First Landing maritime forest, Chesapeake Bay shore, Sandbridge dunes, and Back Bay wildlife enough daylight and energy. After that, let the waterfront, shops, casual stops, or one quiet bench keep the day from feeling over-planned.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Leave room before dinner.

A short pause before dinner keeps a full day from turning into a stack of obligations.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at Heirloom.

A reservation-worthy Virginia Beach dining room pairing seasonal coastal ingredients with a more composed dinner away from the boardwalk crowds.

Bookable Experiences

Day 3

Oceanfront boardwalk, beach, and Rudee Inlet.

Begin with the broad Atlantic, follow the boardwalk between the fishing pier and Neptune Park, then finish near Rudee Inlet or the evening blocks around the hotel.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Eat close to the sand.

A short first walk makes it easy to read surf, wind, crowds, bike traffic, and the beach-access block before carrying chairs and bags.

8:00 AM

Oceanfront day

Walk first; choose the beach block second.

The boardwalk is a three-mile oceanfront promenade with a separate bike path. Neptune Park, the fishing pier area, 17th Street, and the south end near Rudee Inlet each create a different day.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Turn south toward boats and the aquarium district.

Rudee Inlet adds fishing boats, cruises, waterside meals, and an easy connection toward the Virginia Aquarium without leaving the southern Oceanfront corridor.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at 1608 Crafthouse.

A casual crafthouse for burgers, beer, and a substantial post-beach or post-paddle meal in northern Virginia Beach.

Departure

Protect checkout, luggage, and the trip home.

Use the final morning for one nearby stop only when it fits the transportation window without gambling the departure.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Start departure day with 1608 Crafthouse.

Keep the final morning simple: coffee, bakery, harbor walk, beach path, or one last lookout before checkout.

11:00 AM

One last stop

Use one backup idea, not a second vacation.

Pick one scenic stop if it adds pleasure without making the drive home feel late from the start.
